CA Alert: Unsolicited Email Not From Maximus

Heads up, California providers. A daisyBill client alerted our staff to a strange email bearing the logo of Maximus Federal Services, the private organization entrusted by the Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) to conduct Independent Bill Review (IBR) and Independent Medical Review (IMR) on the state’s behalf.

The email header reads “MAXIMUS Registration Instructions - Action Required,” and the email sender identifies as a representative (of some kind) of Maximus.

Except…the email is not from Maximus Federal Services.

daisyNews contacted Maximus, which confirmed that the email was not from Maximus and that the provider may safely disregard the email. The email appears to come from a vendor called Coupa.

“Maximus” Email Raises Questions

A daisyBill provider client forwarded the email below to our team, who were just as perplexed as the provider to see the Maximus logo on an email from Coupa, a vendor unknown to daisyBill.

The email encourages the provider to “Join Coupa,” implying that failure to do so will result in losing access to Maximus. The email claims that “not registering in a timely manner may impact your ability to do business with us.”

A daisyBill agent reached out to Maximus for clarification, as shown in the email below.

Below is the email Maximus sent in reply. This email from Maximus offers no information other than to state that the Coupa email “did not come from Maximus and can be deleted.”

While the exact nature of the relationship between Maximus and Coupa remains unclear, providers should not be pressured to “Join Coupa.”  Ignoring emails from Coupa will not affect providers’ ability to request IBR to resolve payment disputes.

daisyBill will also alert the California Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) that providers are receiving these questionable emails which encourage providers to take actions unrelated to Maximus IBR and IMR services.
