Payer Consultant “Coming After” daisyBill CEO

During a recent planning session for a group presentation, a consultant claiming to represent the country’s largest payers and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) unleashed a heated outburst targeted specifically at me.

In a situation that appeared to be driven by emotions overriding his professional compass, the consultant, identifying himself as a “pit bull,” threatened to use the presentation as a forum to “come after” me. Instead of productive dialogue, the consultant stated his clients “would gladly pay top dollar for front-row seats” to witness him “eviscerate” me.

The consultant also asserted that I “hide behind” my so-called "mean" blog, unwilling to face “the heat” of his client’s responses to my critiques.

I view this incident as an opportunity.

I’ve used the power of the pen unsparingly in daisyBill’s mission to improve workers’ comp by highlighting the significant challenges providers encounter when treating injured workers — especially the unequal regulatory compliance and enforcement standards applied to payers and providers.

The status quo serves neither injured workers nor their employers. As an advocate for the providers committed to treating injured workers, daisyBill consistently demands two straightforward requests:

  1. Providers who agree to treat injured workers should be reimbursed at the rates established by state workers’ comp fee schedules.
  2. States should enact and equitably enforce workers' compensation laws and regulations that are fair and sensible.

While I cannot speak to the consultant’s clients’ thirst for my figurative blood, I can express my willingness to engage with insurers, self-insured employers, Third-Party Administrators (TPAs), PPOs, and the other payer-side vendors whose specific practices I criticize.

If payers believe the information we publish requires correction, I welcome them to contact me personally and share their concerns in writing. My email is cmontgomery@daisyBill.com.

Furthermore, I want to emphasize the significant positive impact daisyBill has on workers' comp (details below). Our sole mission is to improve the care of injured workers by empowering providers, and I am willing to withstand any "heat" necessary to achieve this goal.

daisyBill - Integral Workers’ Comp Technology

In the past 365 days, over 461,000 injured workers received treatment or services from over 5,800 daisyBill providers. These clients used daisyBill technology to transmit over 2.1 million bills and received payments for their services within an average of 9.2 days.

While we advocate for providers, many payers, bill review entities, and networks are also our clients. We are continually exploring new ways our specialized technology can benefit all stakeholders by making workers’ comp more efficient.

Of equal importance, daisyBill offers numerous free resources to the entire workers' comp community in pursuit of our mission to improve the system. No other organization provides as much free assistance for the industry as daisyBill, including:

  • Free, nearly instant chat support for anyone reaching out through our website, client or not
  • Numerous articles unpacking the complex requirements for treating injured workers
  • Free webinars covering new regulations, rules, and industry trends
  • A complimentary claims administrator directory, used by thousands monthly for contact information and payment data
  • Extensive free data on non-compliance trends and other vital statistics, gathered by our dedicated analysts
  • Assistance for payers in need of help with electronic billing

Furthermore, daisyBill has trained over 11,000 billing staff nationwide to handle workers' comp e-billing compliantly and effectively, an essential service amidst a shortage of skilled personnel.

For a decade, daisyBill technology has helped an entire industry to provide care for all injured workers. As evidenced by our actions, we aim to assist all stakeholders, clients and non-clients alike.

Payers and other entities with suggestions, rebuttals, or differing opinions are welcome to contact daisyBill — certainly preferable to any planned "eviscerations" (though I, too, appreciate a good word-a-day calendar).

We won’t bite. We will, however, continue to use our platform to advocate for injured workers' access to the best possible care from reasonably remunerated providers. This goal can be achieved by ensuring reimbursements follow established fee schedules and upholding a sensible regulatory environment where all parties are expected to comply.

The group presentation was canceled. However, payers, I am listening and look forward to your thoughts (but not to threats from your consultants).
