CA DWC Updates MPN List

The California Division of Workers’ Comp (DWC) recently updated its list of approved Medical Provider Networks (MPNs).

The DWC added five new MPNs to the list, and changed the status of 31 existing MPNs. daisyBill software, as well as the MPN information in our free Claims Administrator Directory, has been updated with the latest information.

MPNs: The Bane of CA Workers’ Comp

The DWC list now includes 2,475 MPNs, any of which can be active, revoked, withdrawn or terminated at any given time. Employers and insurers can add or remove providers from MPNs at a whim, making it exceedingly difficult for providers to determine their MPN inclusion (or lack thereof).

MPNs — originally a way for employers to establish a preferred circle of providers to treat their employees — has devolved into an impenetrable labyrinth used by claims administrators and other “entities” to bully providers into discounts, jerk patients from one provider to another, and illegally withhold reimbursement for authorized services.

Of course, every attempt by California legislators to rein in the hydra-headed MPN monster runs directly into a concrete wall. A bill to replace the MPN system with a statewide network open to all workers was kneecapped, while another that would have required employers to share MPN information with workers was rewritten to focus on unrelated issues.

July 2022 MPN Update

Below, see the newly added MPNs, as well as existing MPN status changes, as reported by the DWC.
